The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) scripted a historic chapter today by participating for the first time in the traditional Fulpati Dasai processions in Kurseong and Tindharia. The vibrant processions commenced their journeys directly from the historic railway stations in both locations, symbolizing the deep integration of the railway network with the heart of local civic and cultural life.
Led by the DHR Director alongside railway staff, the contingents joined the community celebrations, seamlessly blending railway heritage with the rich cultural fabric of the Darjeeling hills. This participation marks a significant milestone in reinforcing the deep-rooted bond between the iconic toy train and the local traditions of the region it has served for over a century. _Adding to the festivities, it was also declared that the winners of the traditional dance competitions held during the Fulpati celebrations will get a golden chance to perform at Chaurasta during the upcoming DHR Ghoom Festival._ Dressed in traditional attire, the railway teams walked alongside local cultural groups, receiving an enthusiastic welcome from residents and spectators gathered along the routes.
This initiative reflects DHR’s commitment not only to preserving heritage but also to actively engaging with the social and cultural ethos of the communities along its historic alignment.
