Before Instagram, Before Food Delivery, There Was the Sizzler: Mumbai’s Original Sizzler House Arrives in Borivali.

For generations of Mumbaikars, dining out wasn’t announced by a camera flash.
It arrived with a hiss.

Long before tasting menus, food influencers and viral restaurant openings, there was the unmistakable theatre of a cast-iron platter making its way across a crowded restaurant floor, trailing smoke, turning heads and signalling that something special had arrived at the table.

For many, that memory belongs to Fountain Sizzlers.
Now, three decades after first opening its doors in the heart of Fort, one of Mumbai’s most iconic dining institutions is bringing that experience to the western suburbs with the launch of its newest outpost at Sky City Mall, Borivali.
At a time when restaurant trends change every season, Fountain Sizzlers has remained one of the rare brands that generations of Mumbaikars have grown up with. First dates, family celebrations, report card rewards, Sunday lunches, birthday dinners and post-shopping meals all found a place around its sizzling platters.
The opening is more than an expansion. It is the arrival of a piece of Mumbai’s dining history.
For those who grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s, Fountain Sizzlers was often an introduction to restaurant theatre itself. The anticipation. The aroma. The sound. The moment a platter landed on the table and conversations paused.
Many of those dishes remain unchanged.
The Sizzling Chicken Pepper Garlic Sauce, the Cottage Cheese Shashlik and Golden Patty Cottage Cheese Sizzler, and the legendary Sizzling Brownie paired with their ever-popular chilled Lemon Iced Teas continue to draw loyal patrons decades after they first appeared on the menu. For countless Mumbaikars, these are not simply menu items; they are markers of memories.
Now, those same signatures arrive in Borivali alongside an extensive menu of grills, premium proteins, BBQ favourites, vegetarian classics and hearty platters designed around the format that made Fountain Sizzlers famous.

Located within Oberoi Realty’s Sky City Mall, the new restaurant has been envisioned as a dedicated Sizzler House, celebrating a format that helped define Mumbai’s restaurant culture long before contemporary dining trends took over.
“Fountain Sizzlers has evolved into what we like to call India’s own BBQ and grill house. Sizzlers is its own cuisine in itself satisfying not only the meat eating non vegetarians but also perfectly filling the lack of options vegetarians specifically have in terms of their continental cravings, with our wide variety in vegetarian sizzlers.
The sizzler’s enduring popularity comes from a simple truth: Indians love food that is ‘Garam Garam’ (piping hot) and ‘Pavlovian’ (food that makes your mouth water). That connection has made sizzlers not just a dish, but a lasting part of our dining culture.” — Ayush Arora, Founder of Fountain Sizzlers.

Designed by Sarah Sham of Essajees Atelier, the Borivali outpost draws inspiration from the original Flora Fountain restaurant and the city around it. Through curated artworks, the space reflects Mumbai’s evolution from old Bombay to modern Mumbai, while celebrating the legacy of Goddess Flora, the historic figure synonymous with the neighbourhood where the brand began.
Over the years, Fountain Sizzlers has welcomed lawyers, bankers, office-goers and South Mumbai regulars, before transforming into a lively gathering place for families and friends in the evenings. Yet its greatest achievement may be something simpler: remaining relevant across generations while preserving the experience that made it iconic.
As Mumbai’s food culture continues to evolve, Fountain Sizzlers is betting that some experiences never go out of style
The sound of a sizzling platter is one of them.
Three decades later, that sound is finally coming to Borivali.
