KOLKATA, 20 SEPTEMBER 2023:
As the diplomatic tensions peaking up between India and Canada on the issue of killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a travel advisory to Indian nationals and students, which the Canadian government has already rejected claiming it is one of the safest countries in the world.
Meanwhile, another alleged Khalistani terrorist Sukha Duneke, who had been declared wanted by the Indian government and ranked in the A category has been killed in an alleged turf war with rival groups in Canada.
Sukha Duneke fled to Canada in 2017 from Punjab after submitting wrong information and documents for passport allegedly.
“ In view of the growing anti India activities and politically – condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada, all Indian nationals there and those contemplating travel are urged to exercise utmost caution.
Recently, threats have particularly targeted Indian diplomats and sections of the Indian community who oppose the anti India agenda.
Indian nationals are therefore advised to avoid travelling to regions and potential venues in Canada that have seen such incidents.
Our High Commission / Consulates General will continue to be in contact with the Canadian authorities to ensure the safety and well being of the Indian Community in Canada.
Given the deteriorating security environment in Canada , Indian students in particular are advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant.
Indian nationals and students from India in Canada must also register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or Consulates General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their respective websites, or the madad portal ( madad.gov.in). Registration would enable the High Commission and the Consulates General to better contact with Indian citizens in Canada in the event of an emergency or untoward incident,” tweeted Mr. Arindam Bagchi official spokesperson of MEA on Wednesday.
The population of Canada is 37 million, out of which 1.6 million people are of Indian ethnic or cultural origin, which is about 3.7 percent of the total population, as per the 2021 census.
