The Government of Uttar Pradesh has approved an ambitious tourism development plan for the historic and religious site of Vidur Kuti in Bijnor district. Being developed as a key destination in the Mahabharata Circuit, the state government has sanctioned an estimated amount of Rs. 20 crore for the project. Associated with Mahabharata era scholar Vidur, this site has long attracted both devotees and tourists.

This information was shared by Uttar Pradesh’s Minister for Tourism and Culture, Jaiveer Singh. He said, “Vidur Kuti, the meditative abode of Mahatma Vidur, advisor to the Kuru dynasty, holds immense historical importance. The state government is committed to preserving and enhancing this religious and cultural heritage. The department is working to make Vidur Kuti a more attractive tourist destination by improving facilities for visitors.”

Development to Flow like a River at Vidur Kuti:

Through the development of Vidur Kuti, the Tourism Department aims to give Bijnor a new identity on the national and international tourism map. Planned developments include the construction of an entrance gate, beautification works, lighting, an information center, restrooms, drinking water facilities, and resting areas.

Promoting Religious Tourism Alongside ODOP:

The Tourism Minister added, “The Vidur Kuti development project will not only boost religious tourism in the region but also create new employment opportunities at the local level. Traditional occupations will gain fresh momentum. The district’s One District One Product (ODOP), ‘wood carving’ will benefit immensely. With the department’s efforts, the region’s cultural legacy will gain global recognition while also improving the economic conditions of local artisans.”

Potential for Ecotourism Development:

Minister Jaiveer Singh emphasized that Bijnor also holds immense potential for ecotourism development. The Amangarh Tiger Reserve and Haiderpur Wetland are key sites. Spread over 95 square kilometers, the Amangarh Tiger Reserve has become a top choice for wildlife and nature lovers, hosting tigers and many rare species. Haiderpur Wetland, a paradise for birdwatchers, attracts migratory birds from across the globe during winter. Affordable homestay options operated by the Tourism Department are also available for tourists. Bijnor’s ecotourism model is not only promoting environmental conservation but also proving to be a major step towards sustainable development.

Why is Vidur Kuti Special?

Vidur Kuti holds deep mythological significance from the Mahabharata era. Mahatma Vidur, after unsuccessfully attempting to dissuade King Dhritarashtra from supporting the war due to his attachment to his son Duryodhana, renounced everything in Hastinapur. He came to the eastern banks of the Ganga and began living in a hermitage he built there. It is believed that when Lord Krishna’s attempts to mediate peace with the Kauravas failed, he visited Mahatma Vidur at his hermitage. The footprints of Mahatma Vidur are still preserved on marble at the site and continue to draw large numbers of pilgrims and visitors.
