Direct international flight operations will start from Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA)  in Bhuvaneswar in Odisha from May this year.

Budget airlines Indigo will start flight operations to Singapur, Bangkok and Dubai from Bhuvaneswar.

The lone international flight started by Air Asia from Bhuvaneswar to Kuala Lumpur ( Malaysia)  in 2017 have been stopped since the international flights have been closed in March 2020, due to the outbreak of the global  covid -19 pandemic by the central government.

Director of BPIA, Mr. Prasanna Pradhan said that at present renovation work of the old terminal building is going on at full swing. It is expected to be completed by end of March and then will be followed up by series of trail runs of international aircrafts.

All the aircrafts will be 186 seater. Recently an agreement has been signed between the Odisha government and Indigo in this regard.

According to the agreement the state government will bear the entire cost of the direct flight operations to these three destinations and instead will collect the revenue from the ticket sales.

The Odisha government has approved the plan in December last year.

In absence of direct international flight services, the passengers of Odisha  had to rush to nearest airports at Kolkata or New Delhi to board international flights.
