Established in 1962, IHM Taratala, Kolkata is among the oldest hospitality institutions in the country and has, over six decades, earned a reputation for academic excellence, disciplined professional training and strong industry engagement. The institute, functioning under the aegis of the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology and affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, combines theoretical learning with intensive practical training across key hospitality disciplines in reputed hotel brands.
National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology has recently rejuvenated the entire framework of Hospitality education in association with Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi to equip the students for the future and aid in holistic learning introducing course segments such as Digital Marketing, Retail Management, Facility Management, Sustainable Tourism, Revenue Management and AI. These subjects have opened the doors to multiple professional sectors for said graduates of hospitality education. Further, as announced in the Union Budget 2026, NCHMCT is all set to be upgraded to the status of “National Institute of Hospitality”, further bolstering its credibility. This is set to further upgrade the standards of education dispensed at IHMs across India, a fraternity of which IHM Taratala Kolkata is a part of. The institute further recorded notable placement outcomes during the academic year 2025–26, reflecting the growing demand for hospitality graduates across multiple sectors. According to institutional data, students secured more than 600 job offers through campus recruitment drives conducted by 59 companies from the hospitality and service sectors. Amongst these, 130+ offers were extended for Management Trainee positions in hotels, while 245+ offers were extended for Management Trainee programs in service sector organisations other than hotels.

Students have been successfully placed with international organisations as well. This is in concurrence to a long existing track record which is proven by the fact that IHM Taratala Kolkata has received accolades of the “Best Placement Award” amongst all IHMs under Ministry of Tourism Government of India.
Industry collaborations continue to form an important part of the institute’s training and job placement ecosystem. IHM Taratala Kolkata has entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with several leading hospitality brands including Marriott International, ITC Hotels Limited, InterContinental Hotels Group, Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels Limited, Lemon Tree Hotels and The Stadel Hotel Kolkata – aimed at strengthening industry exposure, skill development and career opportunities for students, faculty development and skill training and service audit conducted by IHM Taratala Kolkata for the hotels.
Through these partnerships students learn hands on from the industry leaders themselves. Additionally, in response to the increasing interest among students towards cruise hospitality careers, the institute has also initiated focused efforts in maritime hospitality certifications. Recently, an exclusive MoU was signed with the Indian Maritime University, Kolkata Campus, to create greater awareness, certifications and specialised pathways related to cruise hospitality and maritime service sectors.
Apart from classroom teaching and laboratory training, the institute places significant emphasis on experiential learning through hospitality events, industry interactions, competitions and institutional activities. Faculty members with extensive academic and industry experience play a pivotal role in mentoring students and preparing them for professional environments.
One of the institute’s most prominent initiatives is Gourmet Nite, the flagship annual food festival, regarded as one of the largest culinary and hospitality event in Eastern India. This event serves as a large-scale practical learning platform where students participate in planning and managing various aspects of hospitality operations, including food preparation, food and beverage service, guest management and event coordination. The event is attended by the who’s who of the hospitality industry including General Managers, Executive Chefs, F&B Managers, Rooms Division Managers as well as individuals from allied sectors and Government officials, who experience, first hand, the quality of training and education provided to the students by the institute. The event helps the students apply classroom learning in to a real life setting.
