While the Maroonagar (Jangal Pradesh) region of Bikaner has given the nation many remarkable personalities, this “second Kashi” has produced one such guardian of history of whom Rajasthan and the entire country are proud—80-year-old veteran Thakur Mahaveer Singh Tanwar of Daudsar. Through his unparalleled contribution to the preservation of Bikaner’s history and literature, he has truly brought to life the saying “Deepaiwaṁrodesh, jyaanrosahitjagmagai” (When the lamp of knowledge is lit, the nation and its literature shine). With unrelenting passion, dedication, and zeal, he has turned this proverb into reality, earning the title of a “moving, living school of history and literature preservation.”
Expressing these sentiments at a felicitation ceremony held today at Thakur Mahaveer Singh Ji’s residence Jaswant Nivas, Hinglaj Dan Ratnoo, Assistant Director of the Department of Information & Public Relations, Rajasthan Information Centre, Kolkata, honored him for his lifelong service.
It is noteworthy that Thakur Mahaveer Singh Ji and his family share deep ties with the royal family of Bikaner. His grandfather Shri Jaswant Singh Tanwar served as the Prime Minister of the Bikaner princely state and was an honorary member of India’s Constituent Assembly, where he worked alongside Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in framing the Indian Constitution—his contribution remains unforgettable. His father Brigadier Bagh Singh Ji gifted the nation the strategically crucial Chushul Airbase on the India–China border, which continues to be a vital military asset for the country. His father-in-law, Rana Pratap Singh Rathore of Gudamalani (Barmer), was also a highly respected and accomplished personality.
Thakur Mahaveer Singh Ji possesses a treasure of historical and literary knowledge that today’s generation urgently needs to access and preserve. Whenever the subject of historical conservation arises, his name stands tall as someone who has carefully safeguarded the rich heritage of history and literature. Notably, Brigadier Bagh Singh Ji also served as ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
The literary guardian’s childhood was spent in Nagar Utari, Jharkhand, where his father served as the country’s first Coal Commissioner. The invaluable collection of history and literature preserved by such a distinguished personality remains a priceless legacy for the nation’s fountain of knowledge.
On this occasion, along with Mr. Ratnoo, dignitaries including Dushyant Singh, Sunil Prajapat, Girdhari Dan Bithu, and senior litterateur Jagdish Ratnoo were present.
