On May 24, 1978, the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation — Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation — began its journey with a grand vision: to establish Madhya Pradesh as a distinct destination on the national and global tourism map.

Over the past 47 years, MPSTDC has laid a strong foundation for tourism that helped Madhya Pradesh earn the identity of “The Heart of Incredible India.” The story of MPSTDC is, in many ways, the story of Madhya Pradesh itself — a state that showcased its culture, heritage, forests, spirituality, and hospitality to the world as a unique tourism experience.

What started with just two hotels has now grown into one of India’s largest state-run tourism and hospitality networks. There was a time when Madhya Pradesh possessed extraordinary heritage sites, dense forests, spiritual destinations, and world-class monuments, yet tourism infrastructure remained extremely limited. Reaching and staying at destinations such as Khajuraho, Sanchi, Bhimbetka, Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Orchha, Ujjain, and Pachmarhi was far from easy.

At such a crucial time, MPSTDC stepped in to develop hotels, resorts, and tourism facilities in areas where private investment was almost non-existent. This initiative eventually became one of the greatest strengths of tourism in Madhya Pradesh. Over the years, MPSTDC built a vast network of hotels, jungle resorts, heritage properties, wayside amenities, and tourism units across the state. Today, this network connects nearly every major tourism circuit in Madhya Pradesh.

The tourism model of Madhya Pradesh is built around two major institutions. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board focuses on tourism promotion, investment, branding, and policy development, while MPSTDC is responsible for creating and operating tourism infrastructure and hospitality services. MPSTDC’s primary focus has always been to develop tourism facilities in destinations where private investment had not yet reached. Once these destinations were developed, they were further expanded through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models. However, MPSTDC’s success extends far beyond building hotels. It transformed tourism into a driver of local development.

Thousands of young people gained employment opportunities, local handicrafts and traditional cuisines received recognition, and economic activities increased in remote regions. Destinations that once saw very few visitors are now preferred by travelers from across India and around the world. Today, MPSTDC is not just a tourism corporation — it has become a symbol of Madhya Pradesh’s evolving identity. It represents the trust of millions of tourists, the livelihood of thousands of families, and the strong foundation of the state’s tourism economy.

The Foundation Day on May 24 is not merely a date; it is a celebration of the vision, dedication, and continuous progress that has placed Madhya Pradesh among India’s leading tourism states.
