In the first four months ( Januaryto April 2025) of this year about thirty two lakhs forty thousand six hundred and ninety three foreign tourists arrivals are registered in India, says tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat today.
The top five international tourist source markets have been in the year 2024 – USA, Bangladesh, UK, Australia and Canada. Asian countries like Malaysia and Sri Lanka have stood sixth and seventh.
Since the year 2022, the rankings have remained almostthe same. While in the year 2024 a total of 99,51,722 FTA have been registered in India, according to Bureau of Immigration figures.However Bangladesh has slipped this year from second to fourth position.
The USA, Bangladesh, UK, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Germany, France and Russian Federation the top ten countries have registered 603841,133363, 415056, 177636, 213699,129122,112531,104170,88536 and 78433 respectively in the first four months of this year.
While USA, Bangladesh and UK had registered 1804586,1750165,1022587 foreign tourist arrivals in India in the year 2025. In 2022 and 2023 about 6437467 and 95,20928 foreign tourist arrivals have been registered in India .
The Ministry of Tourism promotes India as a tourist destination in overseas markets through various initiatives in collaboration with the Indian Missions abroad. At present, the Ministry does not have any dedicated tourism offices overseas.
While Promotion and development of tourism is primarily the responsibility of the concerned State/UT, Ministry of Tourism under the schemes of ‘Swadesh Darshan’, ‘National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation & Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)’ and ‘Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development’ provides financial assistance to State Governments/Union Territory Administrations for the development of tourism related infrastructure and facilities at various tourism destinations in the country.
Ministry has revamped Swadesh Darshan Scheme as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0) with the objective to develop sustainable and responsible destinations following a destination centric approach.
Further, Government of India during the financial year 2024-25 has sanctioned 40 projects in 23 States for ₹3295.76 Crore under ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale’ Scheme.
This information was given by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.
