RAILWAY: CODE FOR COMMUNITIES: TOY TRAIN EDITION’ ON TEACHER’S DAY

On Teacher’s Day 2026, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in collaboration with Google Developer Groups Siliguri successfully executed Code for Communities: Toy Train Edition,an offline hackathon that brought together builders, developers and AI enthusiasts aboard the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Heritage Train to create technology-driven solutions for real-world challenges in the hills.

The special expedition commenced at 9:00 AM IST from Kurseong Railway Station, where Shri Rishav Choudhary, Director Darjeeling Himalayan Railway officially flagged off the special train. The journey traversed the UNESCO World Heritage route from Kurseong to Darjeeling and back, transforming the heritage railway carriage into a moving innovation space where participants built and explored AI-powered solutions.

Rather than conventional workshops or training sessions, the hackathon focused on building solutions around the key domains- hills tourism and broader local problems faced by communities in the hills. Participants worked collaboratively to identify challenges, develop ideas and build technology-driven prototypes using AI models and modern development tools.

The initiative by Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in collaboration with Google Developer Groups Siliguri demonstrated a simple but powerful idea with access to the internet and modern AI models, builders can create meaningful solutions from anywhere even while travelling through a historic railway route. By bringing the hackathon directly into the Heritage Train, the event created an unconventional environment where heritage, technology, creativity and community problem-solving came together.

The event established a meaningful bridge between nineteenth-century engineering and twenty-first-century innovation. By turning the DHR  Heritage Train into a space for building solutions, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Google Developer Groups Siliguri demonstrated how heritage infrastructure can become a platform for modern innovation and community development.

Code for Communities: Toy Train Edition ultimately highlighted that innovation does not require a conventional workspace. With the right tools, connectivity and an empowered community of builders solutions can be created from anywhere.
