HYDERABAD | 22 APRIL 2025:
This April, Burma Burma, India’s favourite Burmese speciality restaurant and tearoom, welcomes you to a very special celebration – ‘Thingyan’ – the Burmese New Year and harvest festival. Our chefs are busy prepping to bring you the most sumptuous Burmese festive dishes and refreshing beverages with a limited-edition festive menu available for dine-in at our restaurants in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad and for home delivery through Swiggy and Zomato from April 14-May 11, 2025. There is an exciting, new line up this year with the Thingyan Tiffin Meal, traditional celebratory desserts, live hawker-style Noodle Salad offering, and a selection of refreshing new beverages. Thingyan, also known as the Water Festival, is characterised by the playful act of water splashing, symbolising purification and washing away of the old to make way for the new. The festivities extend beyond Burma’s borders, aligning with the New Year and harvest celebrations across Asia. This spring, Burma Burma brings this exuberance alive with a specially curated festive menu that captures the very soul of joyous celebrations. Community eating has always been at the heart of Burmese and other Asian cultures and no festival is complete without feasting with your loved ones.
This Thingyan Festival menu is packed with fresh ingredients and the vibrant flavours of home-style Burmese cooking. It is inspired by the team’s travel to Burma and their experience of dining together with local communities during Thingyan. The centrepiece of Burma Burma’s New Year menu is the Thingyan Tiffin Meal for two persons, (priced at Rs 1800++) served in a special enamel multi-tiered tiffin made by Burmese artisans. Unbox the tiffin and dig in to a truly celebratory meal with multiple dishes and accompaniments. First is the crunchy Hand-tossed Broad Beans with a fried Tofu Sandwich followed by the Mock Meatball Curry of fragrant spices to be savoured with a flaky Palata. Next up is a zesty Tofu and Bottle Gourd Curry perfect with a helping of aromatic Jasmine Rice with White Peas topped with spicy stir-fried soybean. Sides include Pumpkin and Bok Choy Stir Fry sautéed in a light sauce, and hand-pounded creamy cashew and tangy tomato & preserved bean dips. Adding to the festivity and inspired by the street food traditions of Burma, is our very own in-house hawker, who tosses up a customised Hawker’s Noodle Salad from a plethora of fresh ingredients, table side.
No festive meal is complete without sweets, and we have a selection of classic desserts and refreshing drinks inspired from traditional Burmese beverages. So, welcome the New Year and indulge in our festive menu with friends and family at Burma Burma in Mumbai (Fort & Oberoi Mall-Goregaon), Delhi NCR (DLF Mall of India-Noida, Cyber Hub-Gurugram and Select City Walk-Delhi), Bengaluru (Indiranagar, Forum Rex Walk-Brigade Road, Orion Mall-Rajajinagar, and Mall of Asia-Hebbal) Kolkata (Park Street), Hyderabad (Knowledge City) and Ahmedabad (Palladium Mall). Burma Burma, an ode to the people and culture of Burma, is an introduction to its cuisine in a modern and eclectic way, amalgamating traditional flavours with contemporary interpretations. Each year, the culinary team delves a little deeper into Burma’s history and culture to bring its most cherished native food to your table. Lacquer coated enamel tiffins are a significant part of Burmese culture with locals using them to carry their meal to their workplace and monks using it to collect alms. It is not an uncommon sight in different parts of Burma to spot groups at lunch time with their open tiffin boxes, eating together. This practice of sharing food was witnessed by our culinary team on one of their many research trips around the country, when a local family invited them to feast on a traditional meal. The team took inspiration from this to create a festive ‘Tiffin Meal’ offering that highlights the joy of feasting together during the Burmese New Year. With this year’s Thingyan menu, our chefs have tried to capture the very essence of Burmese cuisine, selecting dishes that showcase its incredible culinary diversity.
Ansab Khan, Head Chef, Burma Burma remarked – “Thingyan is Burma’s most joyous occasion and what better way to celebrate than with food. Each year we strive to present a new facet of Burmese cuisine and this harvest festival’s offering is inspired by home-style celebratory dishes. At the heart of this year’s celebrations is the ‘Tiffin Meal’ for two, comprising a perfect assortment of appetizers, dips, mains, and desserts served in a special tiffin box and best represents the different elements of a typical Burmese meal, showcasing fresh produce, native ingredients and regional Burmese cooking styles. As you savour each dish, you immerse yourself in lively conversation, sharing stories and laughter with those closest to you. And that is the essence of a true celebration.”
According to Ankit Gupta, Co-Founder, Burma Burma, “The Thingyan Festival is a time for celebrating new beginnings and our specially curated festive menu captures the essence of this occasion. The shared festive meal and vibrant atmosphere will transport you to the heart of Burma and is the perfect way to welcome the New Year – surrounded by loved ones and delicious food”
Begin the feast with Burma’s favourite snack, Hand-tossed Broad Beans, cooked two ways and served with a fried Tofu Sandwich packed with a crunchy cabbage and mint salad. Inspired by a popular staple in Burma, the Palata with Mock Meatball Curry in a zesty, spicy sauce is perfect to eat with the flaky, home-style flatbread. Burmese love for their fresh, local vegetables is legendary and no festive meal is complete without unique preparations like Tofu and Bottle Gourd Curry simmered gently with fragrant spices. It pairs perfectly with the Jasmine Rice with White Pea – a dish inspired by a signature offering at all Burmese feasts – Pe Htamin, topped with spicy soybean stir-fry. The Pumpkin and Bok Choy Stir Fry sautéed in a light sauce and the creamy cashew and tangy tomato & preserved bean dips compliment and bring together the dishes in the Tiffin Meal. Inspired by the street food hawkers on the streets of Yangon and adding a fun element to your dining experience is our live Hawker’s Noodle Salad offering. Guests can select from an assortment of 16 fresh ingredients including three kinds of noodles, chickpea tofu or fried tofu, and an array of dressings such as tamarind water, lime, and turmeric oil and have it customised to your taste and tossed table-side by our in-house salad hawker.
Indulge your sweet tooth with a curated set of desserts including the traditional Banana Sanwin Makin, a sweet banana pudding with semolina, the creamy, chilled Black rice custard made with coconut milk and the Sago Delight, a tapioca pudding topped with a coconut custard and hints of nutty sesame. If you still have sweet cravings – try the Tropical Jelly bursting with flavours of mango and coconut – a nostalgic sweet enjoyed by communities in Burma.
Pair your meal with specially crafted beverages: Plum Sour, a delightful drink with tangy house-made plum puree, zesty lime, cooling black grass jelly, topped with fizz, Basil & Ginger a fragrant blend of fresh basil and ginger that pair with the citrusy lemongrass, and Musk Lemon that combines sweet musk melon, with refreshing tangy lemon, and floral white tea lavender.
Burma Burma restaurants offer more than culinary diversity and strive to bring Burmese culture and traditions to the centre stage. Begin your Thingyan meal experience with a ceremonial Burmese hand wash which signifies renewal and new beginnings. Each restaurant will be decorated with vibrant yellow, orange, and pink hues to mirror the exuberance of the Padauk flower which blooms during this auspicious time and is an integral part of the celebrations, and the “Ah-Tar-Oh” – ceremonial floral arrangements. As the festivities unfold, indulge in a culinary journey that mirrors the richness of Burmese traditions and the interconnectedness of Asian cultures. Join Burma Burma in celebrating Thingyan with open hearts, good company, and a feast that reflects the joy of the Lunar New Year.
About Burma Burma :
Founded in 2014 by childhood friends, Chirag Chhajer and Ankit Gupta, Burma Burma (Hunger Pangs Pvt. Ltd.) currently owns 12 restaurants across Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad & Hyderabad. The concept hails from Gupta’s Burmese roots. His mother and her family who were brought up in Myanmar had a great influence, expanding his food platter with heady flavours of Burmese cuisine. The brand is an amalgamation of the two biggest forces in Ankit’s life, his father’s lineage of restaurateurs and the treasured family recipes from his mother’s heritage. Armed with the concept and design, he approached his friend Chirag Chhajer, a food enthusiast, and an avid traveller to bring Burmese food to Indian tables. But Burma Burma is more than a restaurant. It is a wholesome and innovative dining experience and a holistic experience of Burma in terms of food, culture, and happiness.
