TTT SPECIAL: AI SUGGESTS; HUMANS DECIDE: ZOSTEL DATA REVEALS HOW INDIA REALLY CHOOSES WHERE TO TRAVEL

(Ahead of World Tourism Day, World’s largest chain of backpacker hostels data shows that while AI is changing how travellers discover destinations, the decision on where to stay remains firmly human)

As artificial intelligence becomes a growing starting point for trip planning, data and on-ground patterns from Zostel, the world’s largest chain of backpacker hostels with 110+ properties across India, show that AI is reshaping discovery, not decision-making. Travellers may arrive at a destination because an algorithm suggested it, but what determines where they stay, how long they stay and whether they return continues to be shaped by community, reviews and word of mouth.

Zostel’s own platform data reflects this shift already underway as visitors arriving through AI tools now spend 40 to 50% more time browsing the platform than those arriving through traditional search, suggesting they come in with a narrower, more considered shortlist rather than a cold search. Even so, that extended browsing time points to a decision still being made, not one already settled by the AI suggestion itself.

Zostel’s own network offers a clear illustration of what happens next. Destinations such as Bir, Ziro and Gokarna grew into some of the brand’s fastest-growing locations not through algorithmic visibility, but through travellers sharing recommendations after visiting. The brand’s ongoing Sound of Seven initiative, connecting Northeast India’s music festivals, including Ziro Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival and Hornbill Festival, with curated road trip itineraries, reflects the same pattern: destinations gain traction because of culture and community, not because a tool ranked them highly.

Dharamveer Singh Chouhan Co-founder Zostel and Zo World and Group CEO Zo world said, “AI can narrow a traveller down to a destination, even a shortlist of places to stay. But nobody has ever booked a hostel because an algorithm told them to. They book because something about the place, a review, a story, a friend who stayed there, made them trust it. Our own data backs this up. Travellers coming to us through AI spend far longer exploring before they commit, which tells us the decision is still theirs to make, not the algorithm’s.””

Zostel’s data shows early but consistent signs that AI tools are becoming part of how travellers first encounter a destination or property. What the same data shows just as clearly is that this discovery step rarely stands alone. Bookings continue to be shaped by the trust signals Zostel’s community-first model has relied on since it began operation.Reviews from past guests, recommendations from fellow travellers, and the reputation a destination or property builds over time.

For a brand built on community over curation, this is not a new dynamic, only a new entry point. Zostel’s positioning as a backpacker-first, community-led network means the final decision has always rested with the traveller and the people around them, well before AI became part of the conversation.
