UNION SHIPPING MINISTER SHANTANU THAKUR URGES MoCA TO START SEAPLANE SERVICES IN FARAKKA OF WEST BENGAL

KOLKATA, 26 APRIL 2023:

Union minister of state for shipping, Shantanu Thakur has proposed to start seaplane services at Farakka.

“ I have already send a proposal to union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia urgim him to start seaplane services at Farakka. Farakka barage situated upon the Ganges iks internationally known and to further boost the communication and tourism I have offered to start sea plane services,” added Shantanu Thakur.

The inland water ways department and shipping department is trying to increase trade and business through the inland waterways of the country.

Under the ‘Artha Ganga’ Project the centre has planned to set up more than 60 jetties between Haldia to Varanasi.

The Arth Ganga Project implies a sustainable development model with a focus on economic activities related to Ganga.

At present renovation and restoration work of the lockgates of Farakka Barrage are going on. Once completed ships carrying freight will run in the Varanasi – Farakka route.

Shantanu Thakur who has come here to inspect the progress of the ongoing work  of the Farakka Baragge said that he is hopeful that the central government will give a nod to his proposal to start seaplane services in Farakka barrage.

Farakka barrage is located upon River Ganges in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The operations started in  April 1975.
