Hundreds of people of the sindhi community ranging from children to aged persons enjoyed the siondhi new year celebrations, Cheti Chand at Apsara Club in Park Street in Kolkata on this Sunday.
The event started from 4 PM and for the first time a mela was organised for the occasssion. The mela will continue till 26 March, the organisers said.
Mr. Anil Punjabi, Chairman, president of Vishwa Sindhi Seva Sangam (VSSS) WB Chapter and also Chairman ( East) of Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) said that the main objective behind organising this mahotsav is to retain the peace and harmony amonst each other in the community, to create awareness amonst the children amonst the children.
“ We all gather here and perform the puja of God Jholelal and pray to him that he has blseed us to pass this year sucessfully and will also bless us so that the next year passes sucuessfully and peacefully and the same prosperity remains both in our life and in our business,” added Mr. Anil Punjabi.
People clad in traditional sindhi dresses sang sindhi songs and bhajans. A youth dressed as God Jhulelal blessed every people.
Music, bands, food, games, dances etc have been part of this mahotsav which all the particiapants thoroughly enjoyed. The colourfull new year celebrations ended in a positive note in the late evening.
Lalit Kalwani, vice president, Naresh Parnani, secretary, Kishin Khairajani, treasurer, and members like Divya Kalwani, Neeta Punjabi, Anita Nankani, Usha Choitramani etc were also present.
Cheti Chand is one of the most essential festivals of the Sindhi community and is commemorated in cachet of the birth of Sindhi Philanthropist Saint Jhulelal. This festival is celebrated as the Sindhi New year and it falls on the second day of brighter lunar fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in Chaitra month. On this eve, people pray for prosperity and riches to the mighty Lord Varun (Deity of Water). As Jhulelal is considered to be an incarnation of the Deity of Water. Cheti Chand not only holds religious importance, but it also equally boasts the traditional values & beliefs of the Sindhu community as well.
Cheti Chand, the Sindhi New Year and the 1,073rd birth anniversary of Bhagwan Sai Jhulelal is celebrated throughout the country along with the sindhis of this part of the world.
