Cheenapara or Chinatown in the City of Joy is the only official Chinese colony in India which is almost over 200 years old. Since the early eightenth century the Hakka Chinese community started immigrating to Tangra in the Eastern part of Kolkata. Once upon a time there used to be a population of around 20,000 but which at present has reduced to allmost 2,000. Many of them have settled abroad while others are also looking for alternative avenues.
Most these Hakka Chinese community was engaged in the professions of tanneries and leather goods, beauty parlours and dentistry. But now a days the China Town in India is famous for its authentic chinese cuisines, several gorgous chinese restarurants have come up in recent times and even some have ventured into food product manufacturing business.
In this China Town visitors will found many unique things, which includes the Kali Puja celebrations by the Chinese Community of China Town. Perhaps in the whole world it is only in Tangra, Godess Kali, an Indian Godess is worhsipped by the Chinese Community.
But the breaking news is that for the first time ever the real life stories of a Chinese family living in Tangra and Darjeeling will be captured in reel life by a big production house in Mumbai and Film maker Chahat Mansingka is all set to make a film in Bolywood.

Writer Saradindu Bandopadhyay has plotted his first story on Bomkesh Bakshi, the legendary detective , Satyanweshi in China town.
Later Shakti Samanta directed and produced China Town, hindi romantic comedy thriller film in Bolywood in 1962, starring Shammi Kapoor, the story of which was based on a family living in Darjeeling.
Today, China Town is very famous for the food products of Janice Lee and her father Domic Lee, which produces the popular chinese Pou Chong Kim brand sauces, noodles, chinese rice, jams, squash etc.
Also the eateies like Big Boss, Beijing, China Gardens, Kim Fa, Golden Joy, Kim Ling, Kafulok etc are very popular and mostly visited for their mouth watering dishes like steamed momos, hakka noodles, fried rice, chilly chicken, pan fried tofu, dragon fish, golden fried prawn etc.
