BY RUKMINI SARKAR | MEDIA EXECUTIVE

KOLKATA, 8 MAY 2023:

Film Essay- A new genre of cinema from Kolkata.

Kolkata has given birth to a new form of cinema. It is a film essay.

Produced by Robin Ghosh and directed by award winning film director and former Dean and Professor of SRFTI Ashoke Viswanathan, the video series called Masters of Cinema propels a new kind of film product for film buffs all over the world.

Film Essay on 16 Masters of Cinema from Ray to Tarkovsky.

Masters of Cinema

Masters of Cinema is an experiment, a new genre of cinema. It is a Film-Essay. Sixteen film directors from Ray to Tarkovsky have been chosen, their crafts have been analysed in terms of storytelling, styling of camera and editing, and their worldview.

Objective

The objective of Masters of Cinema is to create a Pocket Dictionary for students of film studies and film buffs.

Choice of Directors

Choice of Directors reflects a wonderful combination – from Ray, Mrinal, Ritwik to Godard, Truffaut, Hitchcock to Kubrick, Polanski, Tarkovsky and so on.

Produced by INFOCOM

Produced by INFOCOM under the creative mentorship of Robin Ghosh, an Economist and Communication Consultant, a pioneer of Television, the project is an innovation of a new genre of film for the global market.

The documentary is made in Kolkata but is targeted at the Global Market.

Directed by Ashoke Viswanathan

The project is curated by the International and National award winning feature film and documentary maker and former Dean and Professor of SRFTI, Ashoke Viswanathan.

What Ashoke has to say:

Ashoke feels “If you love cinema you are trapped for life. It’s a mesmerising and magical world.

The Masters of Cinema have been constantly reinventing themselves. Each Master has his or her own vision, own narrative framework, specific mise-en-scene and methods of storytelling, sometimes leaping out of this world.

I have in this short series captured each of these Masters, and tried to put a finger on their methods, their themes, their preoccupations and contents. What I am trying to do is to create a kind of Pocket Dictionary of Cinema which will give you a gateway to look at and appreciate the rich tapestry of films.”

What Robin Ghosh has to say –

“Having been associated with TV and Entertainment sector in Bengal for last three decades, I would say we have a huge comparative advantage in terms of cost and availability of skilled professionals – the best way to ensure sustainability and growth of entertainment industry in Bengal would be to specialise in producing innovative documentaries for the global market”.

“Think Global and Act Local”.
