About 145 passengers and 6 crew members have been safely rescued through the slides of an Air India Express flight after smoke started billowing out of the aircraft at Muscat International Airport in Oman today.
The smoke was detected just before the take off and the flight was in a taxi of the Muscat- Cochin flight IX-442, VT-AXZ at Muscat International Airport today.
All the passengers have been safely evacuated despite the huge panic after the smoke broke out. Out of the 145 passengers, four were children.
Arun Kumar, Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a probe and said that appropriate actions will be taken.
Official sources of Air India Express at Kochi said that about 14 passengers have suffered bruises on their bodies as they tried to get out hurriedly and a lady passenger has been taken to a dispensary for treatment.
The passengers of the flight will be picked up by a Dubai- Mumbai flight from Muscat (MCT) and will leave for Cochin (COK) after reaching Mumbai as an alternative arrangement , sources said.
The smoke and fire was noticed in engine no. 2 of the AI Express Boeing 737-800 Muscat-Cochin flight during taxiing for take-off.
