India has introduced its first wildlife-safe highway with innovative table-top red markings on National Highway 45 in Madhya Pradesh. Spanning 11.96 km, including a 2 km ghat section through the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, the project aims to enhance road safety while protecting wildlife. With features like animal underpasses, fencing, and eco-friendly designs, this initiative could serve as a model for sustainable infrastructure development across India.

India’s first ‘table-top red marking’ highway spans 11.96 km, including a critical 2 km ghat section in the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve. Inspired by Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road, the 5 mm thermoplastic red coating provides tactile feedback to drivers, encouraging them to slow down naturally without hard braking. This innovative design balances safety and comfort while addressing the ecological sensitivity of the area.
The highway incorporates 25 animal underpasses and eight-foot-high fencing to guide wildlife safely across the road while preventing them from entering the carriageway. Cameras on minor bridges monitor animal movement, and solar-powered lights enhance visibility without harming the environment. These measures align with natural ground and drainage lines, ensuring minimal disruption to the ecosystem.
The eco-friendly surface treatment used on this highway leaves a minimal environmental footprint by avoiding alterations to existing road structures or drainage systems. It reduces noise compared to traditional rumble strips and can be easily removed or modified in the future. This project demonstrates how global design standards can be integrated with local ecological knowledge to create sustainable infrastructure.
