Tourism Malaysia has been knocking on India’s outbound tourist market for quite a while now. Their sustained efforts, coupled with Malaysia’s numerous attractions, has made the country a favoured destination for Indians.

Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali is a seasoned tourism expert with over 34 years of experience at Tourism Malaysia, currently serving as Director in New Delhi. A)Tourism Malaysia’s key role is to position Malaysia as a preferred global destination by promoting its diverse attractions, culture, and experiences, which are of high charm and value. We also facilitate strong industry partnerships to ensure sustainable tourism growth.

2)How is Malaysia ‘staying ahead’ in a very competitive global market?
A)Malaysia stays ahead by adopting a series of measures that include continuously innovating its tourism offerings, and leveraging digital platforms to reach targeted audiences. Close collaboration with industry players ensures we remain agile, competitive, and ‘on the job’ at all times.

3)How important is the Indian tourist market for Malaysia?
A)The Indian market is extremely important for Malaysia, currently ranking No. 6 in overall visitor arrivals. Among medium-haul markets, India is ranked No. 2, which clearly underlines its strong growth potential and strategic importance. It is a market that deserves attention.

4)How would you describe the Indian market? Is it unique in any way?
A)The Indian market in its entirety is very vast, with over 1.4 billion people, and continues to expand alongside strong economic growth. Its enormous diversity allows Malaysia to promote a wide range of segments, including leisure, MICE, weddings, luxury, and niche tourism. All attractions are being projected, and they are all in favour with visiting Indians.

5)Is the Indian market evolving and growing regularly for Malaysia?
A)Yes, the Indian market is evolving rapidly, driven by rising income levels and rapidly and regularly increasing outbound travel demand. This high rate of growth enables Malaysia to tap into multiple segments with more customised and premium offerings.

A)Malaysia offers a compelling mix of vibrant cities, natural landscapes, and rich cultural diversity, along with excellent value for money. A)Yes, we are opening up the market and actively promoting emerging destinations such as Ipoh, Desaru, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching. These destinations offer unique experiences ranging from heritage and culinary trails to beaches, nature, and wildlife.

8)At a personal level, what are your main interests or hobbies?
A) I enjoy playing golf, as it allows me to unwind while also fostering meaningful connections in a relaxed setting. It is both a personal passion and a valuable networking platform.
