On April 16, 1853, history was made when the first passenger train in India steamed out from Bori Bunder ( Mumbai) towards Thane. To celebrate this 173rd “birthday” of the Indian Railways, Eastern Railway is turning the milestone into a mission for a cleaner future through a massive Swachhata Awareness Campaign running for one month from 15th April to 14th May, where 16th April will be specifically dedicated to coach and track cleanliness for this birthday.

Mr. Milind Deouskar,  General Manager of Eastern Railway, stated that as the organisation celebrates the day the first wheels turned on Indian soil, they honour their heritage by committing to a cleaner, better travel experience, noting that this is not just a celebration of the past but a promise to passengers for a hygienic and sustainable future.

Under the leadership of General Manager Mr. Milind Deouskar, this campaign will reach every corner of the Eastern Railway network with full participation from all Principal Heads of Departments, DRMs, CWMs, HODs , other Divisional Officers, and every single employee. The Bharat Scouts and Guides will participate fully, bringing energy to the campaign at Railway Colonies, Railway Schools, Railway Offices, Railway Hospitals, Health Units, and nearby important Railway Stations adjacent to Scouts and Guides Units.

In a unique move to connect with the passengers on April 16th, the General Manager will visit Howrah station and communicate with passengers directly. During these interactions, he will work to make them aware of Swachhata and will personally take feedback from passengers while ensuring the high standards of coach and track cleanliness. DRMs will attend and interact with passengers on at their divisions .Some PHODs will travel and will interact with passengers onboard about the swachhata campaign and their necessity in making Railways clean and safe.

To further encourage community involvement, a Slogan Writing Competition will be held under the Swachhata Campaign. The competition will focus on themes including Swachhata, hygiene, waste management, and keeping railway premises clean.

The campaign marks a collaborative effort to ensure that the legacy of the Indian Railways is matched by the highest standards of civic responsibility. Shri Shibram Majhi, Chief Public Relations Officer of Eastern Railway and State Secretary of Eastern Railway Bharat Scouts and Guides, stated that the goal is to make cleanliness a habit rather than a one-day event, emphasizing that involving employees and the public directly helps build a stronger bond with passengers. He added that their scouts & guides volunteers are ready to hit the ground running at stations and colonies to inspire every citizen to treat the railway as their own home.
