ASSAM GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES NEW TOURISM POLICY AT THE SIDELINES OF ASSAM TOURISM ROAD SHOW 2022 IN NEW DELHI

The Tourism minister of Assam, Jayanta Mallah Baruah has launched the new sustainable tourism policy of the state at the sidelines of the Assam Tourism Roadshow in New Delhi on Monday to create a strategic roadmapĀ  to boost the tourism sector of the state with guidance from the World Bank. Special packages and incentives for the investors in the tourism sector have also been announced.

According to the missionĀ  statement of the policy is ā€œto create a policy framework and strategic roadmap in collaboration with central ministries, various state government departments, local communities and tourism stakeholders to improve the tourism sector in Assam, to support the private sector engaged in tourism in the state, and to strengthen tourism support segments and its sub-sectors.ā€

The policy was prepared after extensive consultations with the World Bank officialsĀ  and at every stage of its preparation, the view of the stakeholders and industry experts has been given importance.

TheĀ  Assam Tourism Policy 2022 has been laid out at a time when the state stands at the threshold of new beginnings and replaces the previous five year agoĀ  Tourism Policy of Assam, 2017.

The new tourismĀ  policy aims to guarantee and safeguard the effective standardisation of processes and practices, to foster uniformity which can result in sustainability and an overall improvement in the quality of tourism related facilities.

“Our goal with this new policy is to enable the world to view it from the point of view of the attraction. The presence of pristine water, forests, mountains, and rivers provides the state with limitless possibilities in the field of tourism. The new tourism policy reflects the same goal. Assam is sure to enchant the travellers with what it has to offer at every nook and corner. For investors, we have also come up with special packages,” added tourismĀ  minister Jayanta Malla Baruah.

The new tourism policy will generate local employment, provide skill developmentĀ  opportunities and empowerment of women.

The event also witnessed panel discussions, audio video presentations, cultural dance performances and B2B interactive sessions to invite entrepreneurs and investors to make the state their investment destination.

Rituparna Baruah, Chairman, Assam Tourism Development Corporation, Maninder Singh, , Additional Chief Secretary, Deptt of Tourism of Government of Assam, Kumar Padmapani Bora, Secretary, Tourism and Managing Director, Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) , Atul Bora, Agriculture Minister ofĀ  Assam, UG Brahma, Minister of Handloom and Textiles, Assam and Sanjoy Kishan, Minister of Labour and Employment, Assam were also present on the occasion.

In July this year , led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma the Assam cabinet approved the new tourismĀ  policy which seeks to createĀ  Special Tourism Zones (STZs) by promoting tea garden tourism, wellness tourism, adventure tourism, along with the existingĀ  wildlife tourismĀ  and heritage and religiousĀ  circuit tourism.

A financial package of Rs.50 crores to develop the infrastructure of tea tourism has been announced for the financial year 2022-2023.

Assam is a state of biodiversity hotspotĀ  with WWF focus areas and with locations such as two UNESCO World Heritage sites,Kaziranga and Manas National Parks,Ā  religious and cultural sites, mighty Brahmaputra river, tea estates, and home to the world famous single horned rhinoceros.
