The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has expressed delight on Shantiniketan becoming part of UNESCO World Heritage List.
Mr. Narendra Modi posted on his official X handle :
“Delighted that Santiniketan, an embodiment of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s vision and India’s rich cultural heritage, has been inscribed on the @UNESCO World Heritage List. This is a proud moment for all Indians.”
During the rabindra Jayanti celebrations this year, union minister of tourism and culture, G.Kishan Reddy has announced that the centre has reccomended Tagore’s abode of peace Shantiniketan to include in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, who is presently in Madrid in Spain has said that she is delighted with the second UNESCO heritage list for the state in the past three years.
Earlier the Durga Puja carnival of the state has also bagged the Unesco World Heritage tag.
“Glad and proud that our Santiniketan, the town of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, is now finally included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Biswa Bangla’s pride, Santiniketan was nurtured by the poet and has been supported by people of Bengal over the generations. We from the Government of West Bengal have significantly added to its infrastructure in last 12 years and the world now recognizes the glory of the heritage place. Kudos to all who love Bengal, Tagore, and his messages of fraternity. Jai Bangla, Pranam to Gurudev,” Miss Mamata Banerjee.

“ It is a great news for the people of West Bengal. First our Durga Puja and now Shantiniketan gets the UNERSCO World Heritage tag. It will definitely boost the tourism sector of the state. Last year a record number of foreigners have visited the state for the Durga Puja Carnival and with the latest tag of Shantinketan on Unesco world heritage list will certainly play a big role in further promoting our tourism throughout the world,” added Mr. Anil Punjabi, national executive committee member of Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI).
The West Bengal Government is also taking several measures to boost tourism including planning to set up a Mini Zoo and many other attractions.
Rabindranath Tagore first visited Shantiniketan on 27 January 1878 when he was 17 years old. In 1888, Debendranath dedicated the entire property for the establishment of a Brahmavidyalaya through a trust deed. In 1901, Rabindranath started a Brahmacharyaashrama and it came to be known as Patha Bhavana from 1925. In 1913, Rabindranath Tagore became the first persosn in Asia to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. By a special act of parliament Visva Bharati University, set up by Rabindrnath Tagore became a central university and an institute of national importance on 1951.
