KOLKATA, 18 NOVEMBER

Normally snowfall occurs in North Sikkim area during the month of December, but this year snowfall has occurred a month ago.

On Friday morning the tourists have woken up and have found that North Sikkim is draped by a white blanket of snow and the scene looked mesmerising.

The roofs of houses, tree leaves, and roads are covered with snow at Lachung and Yumthang.

Hearing the news of snowfall in Sikkim, tourists have flocked to see snowfall in Sandakphu in Darjeeling.

Places to visit to  witness the Snowfall :

Thangu Valley, Zero Point, Yumthang Valley, Gurudongmar Lake, Lachen Village, and Chopta valley in North Sikkim receive heavy snowfall every year.

Zuluk, Gnathang, Old Baba Mandir, Kupup, Memencho Lake, are some of the places in East Sikkim which receive snowfall every year during the winter.

Yumthang Valley and  Zero Point (Riverside valley with snow peaks)-

At an altitude of 12,000 ft above sea level, Yumthang also called the Valley of Flowers in North Sikkim and is home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, which has over twenty-four species of the rhododendron, the state flower. The flowering season is from late February and mid-June when countless flowers bloom to carpet the valley in multi coloured hues of the rainbow. A tributary of the river Teesta flows past the valley and the town of Lachung, the nearest inhabited centre. Yumthang remains closed between December and March due to heavy snowfall. There is also a hot spring in the valley.

Zero Point is also famous for experiencing snowfall in Sikkim in winter.

A trip to Lachung in December can feel like  entering the magical world, especially in winters as the whole village is covered with snow.

Tsomgo Lake (Walk Over Frozen Lake)

Another amazing experience for Sikkim is to walk on the snowy Tsomgo lake in December. Likewise there are some other fun activities at Sikkim around Tsomgo Lake, such as a yak ride, the joy of stepping on a thin layer of ice is incomparable. Tsomgo Lake is better to be seen in December when it is in excellent condition. Tsomgo’s snowflake sheet works as a winter mirror, reflecting the ever-changing blue surface.

Nathula Pass (Mountain Pass on Indo-China Border)-

Nathula pass is the only mountain corridor that connects Sikkim with China. Throughout the year the area attracts many tourists but during the winter the area attracts more travelers with increased snow cover.

Zuluk (The Winding Roads To Heaven)-

Beside a winding road, a small village is located, Zuluk or Dzuluk. It was once a transit point to the historic Silk Route from Tibet to India. Winter is very severe here with snowfalls and freezing temperatures.
