The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has officially announced a strategic partnership with the Kanchanjunga Festival to host specialized outdoor community events.

Complementing this collaboration, DHR is independently spearheading a series of dedicated environmental and heritage lighting initiatives as part of the nationwide Swachhta Hi Seva 2026 campaign.

Program Schedule:

September 27, 2026 — DHR & Kanchanjunga Festival Collaborative Events:

Heritage Cycle Ride: A coordinated cycle expedition running from Sukna to Rongtong, designed to promote eco-friendly tourism, physical fitness, and outdoor engagement along the historic foothills.

Community Joy Ride: A special heritage steam locomotive joy ride curated specifically for underprivileged individuals, fostering social inclusion and expanding access to the region’s cultural legacy.

September 27, 2026 — DHR Station Illumination Initiative:

Illumination of Stations: Organized exclusively by DHR, all railway stations along the mountain corridor will feature special heritage lighting, accentuating the architectural beauty of the route and commemorating the launch of the Swachhta campaign.

October 2, 2026 — Environmental Walkathon:

Swachhta Walkathon: Spearheaded independently by DHR on Gandhi Jayanti, railway officials, staff, and local community members will participate in a structured walkathon focused on environmental preservation, station cleanliness, and ecological awareness across the hill section.

The collaborative events with the Kanchanjunga Festival underscore DHR’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and regional tourism promotion. Simultaneously, the independent station illuminations and cleanliness walkathons reflect the administration’s active alignment with national environmental objectives under Swachhta Hi Seva 2026, ensuring that the preservation of this mountain railway remains intertwined with ecological responsibility.
