Within a month after being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi the New Goa Manohar International Airport at Mopa in North Goa has bagged the prestigious best sustaianble greenfield airport award.
The award was handed over in the 14 th conference cum awards for civil aviation 2023 by ASSOCHAM.
Union civil aviation minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia handed over the award to the officials of GMR goa International Airport (GGIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airports Infrastructure.
“ We are delighted to receive this prestigious award, which reaffirms our steady commitment towards sustainability by best use of the available energy and natural resources. Sustainability as one of core concepts, New Goa Manohar Intenational Airport is designed to be zero – carbon footprint and will join the elite club of green airports acorss of world,” said R.V.Sheshan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GMR Goa International Airport.
The criteria for the award category was contribution, innovativeness, applicability, relevance and impact potential in their respective areas. The jury of the award committee evaluated all the criteris before final selection, sources said.
Nilesh Shah, President of Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) is also jubiliant and said that the new airport in North Goa at Mopa is all set to further boost the travel and tourism sector of the state.
ABOUT – Spread over an area of 2132 acres, the airport will initially handle 4.4 million passengers per annum in first phase. The airport become commercially operational from first week of January this year. The cost of the projects is Rs.2870 crores.
The airport has been built on the theme of sustainable infrastructure and comprises a solar power plant, green buildings, LED lights on the runway, rainwater harvesting, state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant with recycling facilities, among other such facilities.
It is the first international and domestic exclusive civilian airport in Goa and is already dubbed as ‘A gateway to explore india’s leading sun, sand and sea destination”.
