FILM & ENTERTAINMENT : A NEW FRAMEWORK FOR REVIVING BENGALI FILM INDUSTRY

BY ROBIN GHOSH,

ECONOMIST AND BUSINESS MENTOR,

KOLKATA | 6 APRIL 2025

That Bengal Film Industry is in collapsing mode is a reality. The existing business model is not working any more. Only a radical and innovative model can help in rejuvenating  this industry.

The crisis is a manifestation of many factors: decline in seat capacity, poor storytelling, archaic promotional strategy, and most importantly — political interference and so on.

Having been  an observer of the business cycle as an Economist and Business Mentor, I can not resist presenting a new playbook — which describes — a new framework which could lift the current Bengali Film industry from the sliding status.

Briefly, the Framework is :

1 Let the industry stakeholders — Creative Professionals, Technicians, Theatre owners, Distributors, Exhibitors, Vendors ,Investors and the Government create a cooperative based platform. The aim of the platform will be to  empower all stakeholders to directly have control over their earnings and operations.

2 Register  a Multi State Cooperative Society(MSCS)  with Central Registrar of Cooperatives.

3 The Cooperative’s initial capital will be raised through share capital contributions from stakeholders.

4 Efforts will have to be initiated to secure support from National Cooperative Development Corporation(NCDC)

5 Secure assistance from NCDC for planning, promotion and financial support.

6 Support would include : setting up the platform, developing a mobile app, and loans for setting up modern infrastructure.

7 The key differences in this model are : each stakeholder receives their reward, and no one gets deprived or deceived.

Is this framework realistic?

Yes. Example:

1 West Bengal Yatri Sathi

2 Karnataka’s Nimma Yatri
