The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, today celebrated its 26th anniversary with a landmark event that brought together the local community, athletes, heritage lovers, and cultural enthusiasts.

To commemorate this special day, DHR organised the first-ever “Iron Sherpa Heritage Run”, a unique initiative exclusively for local residents. The event witnessed an enthusiastic participation of around 200 runners, marking a new chapter in DHR’s efforts to strengthen its bond with the hill communities.

The run commenced from the iconic Darjeeling Chowrasta and concluded at Ghum, India’s highest railway station, symbolising endurance, heritage, and the profound connection between the people of the hills and the historic mountain railway.

Buoyed by the overwhelming success of the event, DHR has announced that the Iron Sherpa Heritage Run will now be an annual fixture, held every year on 5th December to celebrate  DHR’s induction as a World Heritage Site.

The event was  sponsored by Hope and Heal Hospital and was made possible with the active support of GTA Tourism and the Ghum Runners, whose contribution ensured smooth organisation and high community engagement.

Following the run, participants and guests were treated to a unique open-roof cultural performance onboard the Darjeeling–Ghum–Darjeeling train, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of DHR with the rich cultural traditions of the hills. Music, dance, and local art transformed the moving train into a celebration of heritage and community spirit.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway conveyed gratitude to all partners and participants, reaffirming its commitment to preserving heritage while engaging meaningfully with the people who make DHR truly special.

DHR looks forward to making the Iron Sherpa Heritage Run a signature annual celebration of heritage, health, culture, and community.
