KOLKATA, 12 SEPTEMBER 2023:

Shivlahra is situated just 125 kilometers from Amarkantak and 50 kilometers from Anuppur district headquarters in a rock-cut cave at a place named Shivlahra under Darsagar Gram Panchayat at a distance of about 3 kilometers from Bhalumada.

It is situated on the left bank of the Kewai River. Inscriptions were interpreted by Proff. Alok Shrotriya and Dr. Mohan Lal Chadhar, Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak MP, in which inscriptions inform about the construction of Shilagriha by Muldeva of the Vatsa Gotra, son of Sivamit and Mowgli (Moggali), in the kingdom of Swamidatta.

Who was this Swamidatta? This information has not yet come from any other evidence. Dr. Heera Singh Gond, Assistant Professor History, Government College Rajnagar District Anuppur, says that the study of Shivlahra caves and the inscriptions found in them reveals the historical and archaeological importance of these caves.

The caves of Shivlahara and the coastal area of the Kewai River present very beautiful views. A huge fair is held here on the occasion of Mahashivaratri, and thousands of devotees come here. Apart from this, a large number of tourists and nearby residents keep coming here for fun.

These caves hold a special place in terms of understanding the development of rock-cut architecture, not only in Madhya Pradesh but also in the entire country. Even the world of scholars does not know much about them. These caves have become even more important because of the inscriptions on the walls that date back to the early centuries of the Christian era.

The importance of these caves for researchers to understand the development of Indian epigraphy, the development of Prakrit language, and the fundamentals of epigraphy is undeniable. The formula to explain the puzzle of conch script is inscribed on the pillar of a cave in this cave group.

In this way, the historical and archaeological importance of this group of caves increases a lot. Future research on these caves and inscriptions will be able to shed more light on the unknown aspects of Indian history and its broken links.
