KOLKATA, 5 APRIL 2024:

The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Kolkata, in collaboration with Thai Trade Centre in Chennai and Mayfair Lagoon, Bhubaneswar, will organize “Thai Food Festival in Odisha” at Lemongrass Restaurant, Mayfair Lagoon, Bhubaneswar during 12th – 21st April 2024 in celebration of Songkran Festival or Traditional Thai New Year.

The Festival will be inaugurated on Friday 12th April 2024 by Ms. Siriporn Tantipanyathep, the newly-appointed Consul-General of Thailand in Kolkata followed by exquisite Thai cultural performances and a Thai food reception.

Besides Ms.  Siriporn Tantipanyathep, Consul General of Royal Thai Consulate General, Kolkata, Mr. Pichaya Lapasthamrong, Consul of Royal Thai Consulate General, Kolkata etc will also  be present.

This will be the first time that authentic Thai cuisine curated by Consul-General’s personal chef will be brought to Bhubaneswar. With a lineup of renowned Thai dishes such as Tom Kha Gai (Thai Chicken in Spicy Coconut Soup – ranked No. 1 chicken soup by TasteAtlas), Massaman Curry (ranked No. 1 dish by CNN Travel), Tom Yam Goong (Thai Spicy Prawn Soup – ranked No. 8 dish by CNN Travel), and Khao Niaow Ma Muang (Mango Sticky Rice – ranked No. 4.

Pudding by TasteAtlas), a delightful gastronomic journey awaits you here in Bhubaneswar.

The main purpose of the Festival is to bring Thai and Indian peoples closer to one another through culinary cultures. Thai and Indian cuisines share many similarities such as the art of making curry pastes, and the use of spices and coconut milk. Thai cuisine also has health benefits similar to India’s concept of Ayurveda. Therefore, Thai dishes are not only flavourful and healing the body but also telling the story of history and culture of Thai people.

On this special occasion, we will celebrate Songkran Festival or  traditional Thai New Year, which falls on 13th – 15th April every year. In Odisha, Pana Sankranti Festival or traditional new year for Odia people is also celebrated during the same period. During Songkran, bathing Buddha statue and pouring water are significant acts symbolizing cleansing, reverence and good fortune.

It is a joyful time when Thai people reunite with their families, pay respects to elders, and enjoy feasting. Moreover, Songkran Festival in Thailand has been recently inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO in 2023.

At present, Thailand is closer to Odisha than ever before, thanks to the direct flights from Bhubaneswar to Bangkok by IndiGo, and visa exemption scheme for Indian tourists travelling to Thailand until 10th May 2024. To this end, we would like to invite you to the “Thai Food Festival in Odisha” at Mayfair Lagoon, Bhubaneswar and to Thailand in the month of April to join  in the Songkran Festival Celebration!
