Due to heavy snowfall in the Kashmir valley today normal life has been disrupted including the road and air traffic.
The snowfall has snapped the valley from the rest of the country from both road and air link. The Jammu- Srinagar national Highway was closed leading to heavy traffic jam.
While capital Srinagar has received about seven inches of fresh snowfall, Gulmarg more than a feet, Pahalgam nine inches, Gurez 1.5 feet and the plains of Kupwara district around four inches. In the upper reaches, it was around one-two feet. Locals said that the started late Sunday night in most places and is still continuing.
Train services was also disrupted in the Baramulla – Banihal route. Due to bad weather and heavy snowfall the air traffic was also disrupted. Poor visibility and accumulation of snowfall on the runway led to suspension of flights.
Chillai Kalan- the 40 day long harsest winter season normally ends on 30 January. But the cold wave continues 20 day long Chillai Khurd and 10 days long Chillai baccha after end of Chillai Kalan. Chillai Kalan began in 21 st December last year and the maximum snowfall occurs during this period.
Mr. Kulddep Singh, Director of Sri Nagar inaternational Airport said that the visibility was around 200 metres. “ Air passengers are advised to see the latest updates of flight scedules and then come at Airport to avoid further problems,”he added.
The runway snowfall is being continously cleared by airport staffs and all morning flights have been delayed today, the airport director added.
While in Jammu- Sri Nagar highway mudslides are also taking place make clearing job difficult. According the MeT department the snowfall will continue.
