With arrival of twelve more cheetahs from South Africa today, the number of world’s fastest animal crosses double digits today at Kuno Palpur National Park.
Five months after the release of eight cheetahs from Namibia, which was the world’s first inter -continental animal translocation , the second batch of a dozen cheetahs have arrived today.
The 12 cheetahs have been released into the quarantine zone by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and union minister of environment, forests and climate control, Bhupendar Yadav.
The Kuno Palpur Narional Park now has ten male and ten female cheetahs. PM Narendra Modi has released the first batch of the eight cheetahs, including five males and three females from Namibiya on his birthday in September last year.
The last three Asiatic cheetahs in India was poached in 147, and in 1952 India declared cheetah as completely extinct.
The Kuno Palpur National Park authority has claimed that the first batch of eight cheetahs have adapted successfully to the Indian terrain and have been successfully poaching the new herbivore species.
Mr. Bhupendra Yadav tweeted, “ The arrival of 12 cheetahs furthers that journey. In a splendid example of Jan Bhagidari, over 450 cheetha mitr are ensuring the cheetah acclimatize well in India”.
Earlier, after covering a distance of more than 7900 kilometers from Johannesburg in South Africa, these 12 cheetahs reached Kuno National Park via Gwalior after 12 noon.
India’s first Cheetah Safari is set to start at Kuno Palpur National Park soon. The Wildlife Institute of India has prepared the action plan of Project Cheetah in India.
About 100 cheetahs will be brought from South Africa and every year about ten to 12 cheetahs will arrive in India as per the Cheetah relocation plan.
