The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives.

The Government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners.

Moreover, the relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks.

“The recent remarks against foreign leaders and our close neighbours are unacceptable and do not reflect the official position of the Government of #Maldives. We remain committed to fostering a positive and constructive dialogue with all our partners, especially our neighbours, based on mutual respect and understanding,’ says foreign minister of Maldives , Moosa Zameer in his X handle..

Few Indian Travel Agencies have cancelled bookings after the comments made  by three ministers of Maldives against the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. “  Presently it is a non season time but prospective clients will change to different locations if the bilateral relationship deteorates further,”’said a travel agency in Kolkata.

India and Maldives share ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious and commercial links steeped in antiquity and enjoy close, cordial and multi-dimensional relations. India was among the first to recognise Maldives after its independence in 1965 and to establish diplomatic relations with the country. India established its mission at the level of CDA in 1972 and resident High Commissioner in 1980. Maldives opened a full fledged High Commission in New Delhi in November 2004, at that time one of its only four diplomatic missions worldwide.
