KURSEONG | 18 MAY 2026

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), in strategic partnership with the creative collective Poets of Community, officially announced the successful conclusion of the DHR Literature Festival 2026. The three-day cultural symposium, which ran from May 15 to May 17, culminated today, May 18, with a formal valedictory and certificate distribution ceremony honoring the students, youth, and local citizens whose active participation drove the event’s success.

The festival successfully realized its objective of intersecting the industrial heritage of the UNESCO World Heritage Toy Train with the indigenous oral and literary traditions of the Himalayas, leaving a progressive impact on the cultural landscape of the region.

The festival unfolded across Kurseong and Darjeeling, drawing diverse audiences and celebrating regional identity through a series of unique events:

Day 1 | Educational Outreach (Kurseong): Hosted at the historic Victoria Boys’ School, IIT Roorkee alumna and author Megha Mittal led the interactive workshop “Why Poetry Is Boring?”, inspiring local students to reframe poetry as a dynamic tool for modern self-expression.

Day 2 | Heritage & Oral Traditions (Kurseong): The immersive “Rail & Rhythm: The Open-Deck Experience” paired a scenic UNESCO World Heritage steam-locomotive ride with live acoustic performances by regional artists, followed by a mountain folklore and storytelling session at Café De Central.

Day 3 | Multilingual Finale (Darjeeling): Concluding at Café House, Darjeeling, a diverse lineup of writers and artists presented powerful literary works in Nepali, English, and Hindi, addressing the unique heritage and contemporary realities of the Himalayan region.

Honoring the Community: Certificate Distribution Ceremony To mark the official closing of this successful chapter, a special ceremony was organized today, May 18, by the DHR and Poets of Community. Certificates of appreciation and participation were distributed to the numerous children and community members who engaged in the workshops, storytelling sessions, and performances. This gesture underscores the festival’s core mission, not just to showcase art, but to foster and preserve the creative spirit of the Himalayan communities for future generations.
