Safety and security remain at the forefront of Goa’s governance, given its status as one of India’s most sought-after tourist destinations. While crime is a concern in any travel hotspot, Goa has maintained a proactive stance on law enforcement, ensuring a safer environment for both residents and visitors. Recent statistics highlight the state’s high crime detection rate, a critical factor in deterring criminal activities. Moreover, initiatives such as the 1364 tourist helpline and the Pink Force reflect Goa’s commitment to providing quick assistance and security reinforcements to those in need.
Tourism Minister Mr. Rohan A. Khaunte emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining Goa as a safe and secure travel destination, stating,” “Safety is at the heart of our tourism strategy. With a strong policing network, rapid response units, and technology-driven initiatives, Goa continues to set a benchmark in ensuring a secure experience for all travelers.”
According to data provided by the Home Department, Government of Goa, India’s national crime rate in 2021 stood at 445.9 incidents per 100,000 people, a decline from 487.8 per 100,000 in 2020. In comparison, Goa has consistently reported a lower crime rate, reinforcing its reputation as a relatively safe state. Law enforcement agencies in Goa have also achieved a commendable 96.6% detection rate in heinous crimes and an 88% detection rate in overall cases in 2024, indicating effective policing. Strict legal measures have played a crucial role in controlling and resolving issues, ensuring that offenders are swiftly brought to justice.
Recognizing the need for a robust support system for travelers, the Goa Tourism Department, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has launched the 1364 tourist helpline. This 24×7 multi-language assistance service is designed to help tourists in distress, offering immediate guidance in cases of theft, harassment, medical emergencies, and lost belongings. The introduction of this helpline has made it significantly easier for visitors to seek assistance without bureaucratic delays, ensuring their concerns are addressed promptly.
Mr. Kedar Naik, Director of Tourism, further highlighted the role of safety initiatives in enhancing Goa’s tourism appeal, stating,“Goa’s commitment to responsible and regenerative tourism extends to ensuring a secure experience for visitors. The integration of the 1364 tourist helpline and Pink Force reinforces our efforts in making Goa a world-class, safe, and traveler-friendly destination.”
Women’s safety remains a priority in Goa, particularly in areas frequented by travelers. To address this, the Goa Police introduced the Pink Force, a dedicated unit specializing in women’s security and rapid response interventions. Patrolling key tourist zones, public spaces, and transport hubs, this unit is trained to handle emergencies and provide direct support to women in distress. The visible presence of the Pink Force has contributed to an increased sense of security among both tourists and local women, making Goa a safer destination for solo travelers.
