TOURISM DEPARTMENT OF BURDWAN UNIVERSITY SET TO COLLABORATE WITH UNITED NATIONS WORLD TOURISM ORGANISATION (UNWTO), TAFI, TAAI, IATO ETC FOR TRAINING, PLACEMENT, TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT & JOINT ACADEMIC WORK

The University of Burdwan  (BU) has  evinced interest for   collaboration  with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) and Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) for training, placement, technology development and joint academic work. Negotaions are going on at present.

Burdwan University is the only varsity in Eastern India to offer  a master of business administration (MBA) degree in Tourism management. It also offers PH.D in Tourism. The campus also have hostel facilities.

In an exclusive interview to www.thetravelandtourismtimes.com, Dr. Mir Abdul Sofique, Head of the Department (HoD) of Tourism Department of the University of Burdwan said that it is the first tourism department in eastern India to offer MBA ( Tourism) degree way back in 2000.

“ Besides the AICTE approved two years MBA ( tourism) course with total 31 seats  including reserved seats  for SC/ST and OBC , the tourism department of  Burdwan University also offers Ph.D  in travel and  tourism. To further upgrade and uplift the department now we have planned to collaborate with various international and national organisations like UNWTO, TAAFI, TAAI, IATO etc,” Professor Mir Abdul Sofique added.

Presently, foreign  students  from Africa are studying in graduate courses students  faraway states like Oddisha etc have enrolled in the tourism courses in the Burdwan University . The second semester include field study trips and on the job training on the 4 th semester.

There have been till date 100 percent placement for the students enrolled in the courses from reputed companies like Thomas Cook, Make My Trip, Cox and Kings, SOTC, Easy Go, ITDC, Veena World, Air Canada, tourism officers in West Bengal Government’s tourism department etc and the starting salary ranges have been between Rs.25,000 to Rs.30,000 per month and reaches upto Rs.1.5 lakhs , after
confirmations, said BU sources.


The MBA ( Tourism) syllabus  includes field study tour in second semester and in fourth semester – on the job training in reputed  travel agency, airlines, event management companies , tourism corporations, various government departments etc. Travel  management, tour operation, tourism concept and impacts, geography and international tourism, transport in travel and tourism, tourism resources of India and West Bengal, tourism products of India,  airfare and ticketing, sustainable and eco tourism, tour guiding and visitor interpretation, tour packaging and operation management, tourism policy, planning and development, destination marketing etc are studied.
