Eastern Railway is committed to providing modern amenities and world-class facilities to train passengers, aligning with global standards. In line with this vision, Eastern Railway has undertaken the redevelopment of several stations across its Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol, and Malda divisions.

Mr. Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer of Eastern Railway, stated Eastern railway in a bid to provide modern amenities to train passengers, on par with the European countries, railways has selected 28 number of stations falling under the jurisdiction of Eastern Railway (ER) for their redevelopment under ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’ for which foundation stone is to be laid by Prime Minister  Narendra Modi.He further added the redevelopment plan encompasses a blend of modernity with heritage, ensuring that each station reflects contemporary technology while honoring the local culture and heritage of the region.

The redeveloped stations will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including green building elements, proper ventilation, access control gates, escalators, lifts, free Wi-Fi, CCTV cameras, food plazas, children’s game spaces, ATMs, and 24×7 cleanliness. Furthermore he added, the redevelopment plan includes separate arrival and departure buildings, specially-built structures for pilgrims, class waiting rooms, and an array of disabled-friendly amenities.

Eco-friendly aspects such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting, water recycling, and solid waste management systems will also be integrated into the new station buildings. Notably, under the “Amrit Bharat Station Scheme”, all small stations in the selected divisions will receive upgraded passenger facilities, including widened foot-over bridges (FOBs), frontage improvements, spacious waiting areas, surveillance through CCTV cameras, food kiosks, and escalators.

In addition to station redevelopment, Eastern Railway has also launched initiatives under the ‘one station, one product’ scheme to provide space on railway platforms for local farmers and artisans to sell their products, thereby supporting the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ and helping individuals earn their livelihoods.

He further elaborated that Stations in the Sealdah division, including Bangaon Jn., Barasat ,Dum Dum Jn, Gede, Kalyani, Madhyamgram, Naihati Jn., Sonarpur Jn. with total project cost of Rs. 121.47 Cr. is allocated for which foundation stone will be laid on 26.02.2024. Similarly, stations in the Howrah Divisions viz., Bally, Chandannagar, Dankuni, Khagraghat Road, Sainthia Jn., with total project cost Rs. 78.14 Cr. Asansol Division viz. Basukinath, Deoghar, Dumka, Jamtara, Panagarh, Shankarpur, Vidyasagar with project cost Rs. 93.71 Cr. and Malda Division viz. Banka, Dhulian Ganga, Godda, Jangipur Road, Munger, Sabour, Shivanarayanpur with project cost Rs. 104.0 Cr. is allocated. Shri Mitra further enriched us with lustrous history of some important stations nominated this time for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat like Dum Dum Jn. for its association with the British East India Company and the historic Dum Dum Arsenal, which stands as a testament to India’s colonial past and its role in global trade. Naihati, tracing its roots back to ancient times and flourishing as a medieval trade center, embodies centuries of cultural exchange and economic activity along the riverine routes. Sonarpur’s rich heritage, marked by ancient temples and the legacy of the Bengal Sultanate and the Mughal Empire, reflects the region’s deep-rooted spiritual and artistic traditions. Barasat, a hub of administrative and commercial activity during the British era, carries the echoes of resistance from the Indian Rebellion of 1857, symbolizing the struggle for independence. Chandannagar’s unique status as a former French colony exudes charm through its colonial architecture and cultural legacy, underscoring the diverse influences that have shaped India’s history.

Proposed and some projected features of this historically important stations are illustrated below:- Dum Dum Station: The redevelopment work at Dum Dum Station includes the expansion of platform facilities, installation of modern signage, and improvement of passenger amenities to accommodate the growing number of commuters. Additionally, efforts are underway to enhance accessibility features for differently-abled passengers. Total allocated project cost for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat station is Rs. 7.98 Cr.

Chandannagar Station: Chandannagar Station is undergoing a comprehensive renovation, focusing on upgrading platforms, waiting areas, and ticketing facilities. The project also includes the installation of energy-efficient lighting systems and the implementation of green initiatives to promote sustainability.

Total allocated project cost for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat station is Rs. 18.34 Cr.Bally Station: At Bally Station, ongoing redevelopment work involves the refurbishment of platforms, construction of new passenger shelters, and landscaping to create a more welcoming environment. Furthermore, efforts are being made to enhance security measures and ensure the safety of passengers and staff. Total allocated project cost for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat station is Rs. 27.26 Cr.Panagarh Station: Panagarh Station is witnessing significant improvements, including the construction of modernized ticket counters, renovation of washrooms, and installation of CCTV surveillance systems for enhanced security. The project aims to enhance the overall passenger experience and streamline station operations.

Total allocated project cost for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat station is Rs. 15 Cr. Naihati Station: Redevelopment work at Naihati Station focuses on enhancing passenger amenities, such as the installation of new seating arrangements,  renovation of waiting halls, and the introduction of digital display boards for real-time train information. Additionally, efforts are being made to improve cleanliness standards and waste management practices. Total allocated project cost for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat station is Rs. 7.85 Cr.Barasat Station: Barasat Station’s redevelopment efforts include the expansion of platform facilities to accommodate more trains, renovation of ticket counters, and installation of modern passenger information systems. The project aims to improve passenger flow and enhance operational efficiency at the station. Total allocated project cost for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat station is Rs. 28.83 Cr.Sonapur Station: Sonapur Station is undergoing a comprehensive makeover, with renovations encompassing platform upgrades, installation of modern ticket vending machines, and landscaping to enhance the station’s aesthetic appeal.

Additionally, efforts are being made to improve accessibility features for passengers with disabilities. Total allocated project cost for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat station is Rs. 8.10 Cr. He stated “Together, these places weave a tapestry of historical significance, cultural richness, and resilience, contributing to the vibrant mosaic of India’s heritage which will further gain back its glamour after redevelopment under Amrit Bharat scheme”.
