RAILWAY : ENHANCED SAFETY IN AC COACHES : FIRE AND SMOKE DETECTION SYSTEMS (FSDS)

TTT NEWS NETWORK

KOLKATA, 29 NOVEMBER 2024:

At Eastern Railway, passenger safety is not just a responsibility but a commitment that drives every innovation and decision. To ensure a secure journey for all, advanced Fire and Smoke Detection Systems (FSDS) and Fire Detection cum Brake Application (FDBA) systems have been implemented in air-conditioned coaches. These systems are designed to detect potential fire hazards early, giving timely alerts and enabling immediate action to protect passengers and minimize risks.

A faint trace of smoke is detected long before it becomes noticeable. Sensors immediately activate, issuing alerts and initiating emergency protocols. If the situation escalates, brakes are automatically applied, ensuring the train stops safely for evacuation. This cutting-edge technology is now operational in AC coaches, delivering a robust safety framework.

Air samples are continuously analyzed for signs of smoke, enabling early identification of fire risks. Multi-level alarms ensure train staff are promptly alerted. The FDBA system halts the train in critical situations, allowing safe evacuation and firefighting efforts.

*The Fire and Smoke Detection System (FSDS) is a critical safety feature designed to detect and alert the presence of fire and smoke within the AC coach.*

  • Alert: LED to flash on fire detection panel, no indication to the passengers in the affected coach
  • Action: Flasher light to be activated on fire detection panel of affected coach
  • Fire: Brake application shall take place automatically. After a time, delay of 55 seconds after activation of brake application, an audio-visual alarm like a hooter or buzzer etc. along with flashing lights should be activated in affected coach.

*Passenger Benefits*

*Unmatched Safety*: Advanced technology works round-the-clock to monitor and address fire risks.

*Swift Response*: Early warnings help prevent fire incidents from escalating.

*Calm Travel*: Knowing these systems are in place gives passengers peace of mind during their journey.

The introduction of Fire and Smoke Detection Systems (FSDS) and Fire Detection cum Brake Application (FDBA) systems in AC coaches marks a transformative step in ensuring passenger safety. These advanced technologies act as vigilant guardians, capable of detecting and responding to fire hazards with precision and speed. From early detection and timely alerts to automatic brake application, these systems form a comprehensive safety net that minimizes risks and maximizes protection for all onboard.

As Eastern Railway continues to adopt innovative solutions, these advancements set a benchmark in the Indian Railways’ journey towards excellence in safety standards. The goal is clear: to make every journey safe, secure, and seamless, ensuring that passengers can travel with peace of mind, no matter the destination.
