KOLKATA, 15 APRIL 2024:

Eastern Railway advocates for combating the global crisis of single-use plastic pollution. In line with dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, have taken several comprehensive initiatives to eradicate single-use plastics from railway stations and beyond.

The harmful impacts of single-use plastic on our environment, wildlife, and human health are undeniable. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, Eastern Railway is taking multi-faceted approach, to inspire positive change and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.

Eastern Railway is spearheading No Plastic campaign, encouraging passengers, staff, and stakeholders to reject single-use plastics and embrace eco-friendly alternatives. Moreover, Eastern Railway regularly follows a rigorous cleanliness protocol across all railway stations in its jurisdiction, ensuring proper waste management and promoting a litter-free environment. Rag picking by cleaning staff is crucial for maintaining cleanliness in tracks and stations. Eastern Railway’s dedicated cleaning staffs collect discarded materials, contributing to waste management and environmental preservation. Their efforts ensure a healthier and safer environment for all.

Through targeted outreach efforts, including signage, educational materials, and social media campaigns, Eastern Railway is spreading awareness about the detrimental effects of single-use plastic and empowering individuals to make sustainable choices.

Moreover, under the abled guidance of General Manager, Eastern Railway Shri Milind K Deouskar, Eastern Railway is investing in infrastructure upgrades to support waste reduction and recycling initiatives, including the installation of water refill stations, recycling bins, and the introduction of bottle crushers at all stations across the network. These bottle crushers will allow passengers to conveniently dispose of plastic bottles, which will then be recycled into new products, reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills or oceans.

Despite the efforts of the Eastern Railway team, some members of the public continue to disregard proper waste disposal practices, often throwing garbage wrapped in single-use plastic. This undesirable behaviour not only tarnishes the cleanliness efforts of the railway staff but also leads to the chocking of bio toilets and sewage pipes. The accumulation of plastic waste in these critical infrastructure components poses significant challenges, causing blockages and operational disruptions. It is essential for the public to understand the importance of responsible waste disposal and to actively participate in keeping public areas clean and free from plastic pollution.

Mr. Kausik Mitra Chief Public Relations Officer, Eastern Railway stated , “At Eastern Railway, we recognize the critical importance of protecting our planet for future generations. By saying no to single-use plastic and promoting sustainable alternatives, we are not only safeguarding the environment but also fostering a culture of responsible citizenship.”
