KOLKATA, 12 APRIL 2024:

Kolkata and Howrah residents continue to rely on EMU and MEMU trains for their urban commutes, despite their relatively sparse presence. These trains, renowned for their reliability, play a crucial role in facilitating rapid urban mobility within the region. With their rapid acceleration, spacious coaches, and efficient ventilation, EMU trains have become indispensable for intra-city travel.

Dating back to 1957, when the first EMU train service commenced in the Howrah-Sheoraphuli section, these trains have evolved to accommodate the growing needs of commuters. Presently, EMU trains with 9 or 12 coaches are a common sight in the Eastern Railway sector, providing comfortable seating for passengers and facilitating easy transportation of local goods. Each trailer coach accommodates 113 passengers, while the motor coach seats 98 passengers. Vendor coaches integrated into EMU trains can accommodate up to 86 passengers. These trains are powered by DC motors, with traction and converters operating at 25 KV AC.

MEMU trains, operating beyond city peripheries for short to medium distances, further augment the region’s transportation network. With their increased capacity and longer lengths, MEMU trains cater to the rising demand for inter-city travel, offering a convenient and affordable mode of transportation. Currently, a total of 141 MEMU trains operate in the Eastern Railway sector, including 45 in the Howrah division, 13 in the Sealdah division, 85 in the Asansol division, and 6 in the Malda division. The Asansol-Adra section introduced MEMU services in 1995.

Eastern Railway’s commitment to efficiently managing suburban train services underscores its role in the economic and social development of Bengal. With fares starting as low as 5 rupees for local trains, EMU, MEMU, and DEMU trains have become integral to the daily lives of millions, ensuring seamless connectivity and emphasizing the importance of public transportation in the region.

Previously, Kolkata, Howrah, and their peripheries maintained an extensive EMU local train network, with approximately 1272 EMU trains running daily. Among these, Howrah division operated 386 local trains, while Sealdah division operated 886 local trains.

Additionally, DEMU trains operate, powered by diesel motors. Presently, Eastern Railway operates 50 DEMU services, with 11 in the Howrah division and 39 in the Malda division.
